The Paramaribo City & Heritage Tour takes visitors through the historic heart of Suriname’s capital, where colonial architecture, religious diversity, political history, migration, and everyday city life come together within a relatively small area. Much of the route passes through the Historic Inner City of Paramaribo, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002.
The tour begins at Fort Zeelandia, one of the city’s most important historic landmarks, before continuing along the waterfront and through the old city. Along the way, guests visit or pass important sites such as the Central Market, Maarten Luther Church, Grote Stadskerk, Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul, Independence Square, and several monuments connected to Suriname’s social and political history.
A special part of the tour is Paramaribo’s remarkable cultural and religious diversity. Guests will see the well-known Neveh Shalom Synagogue and adjacent mosque, while stories about personalities such as Elisabeth Samson, Maxi Linder, Tetary, Johan Adolf Pengel, and Jagernath Lachmon provide a deeper understanding of Suriname’s complex past.
The route also passes through the Palmentuin and historic streets lined with wooden buildings and old shade trees. Depending on opening hours and accessibility, selected churches, religious buildings, and cultural sites may also be visited from the inside.
Throughout the tour, the guide shares stories about colonial Paramaribo, slavery and emancipation, contract labour, religion, independence, architecture, and multicultural society. The tour ends back near Fort Zeelandia, where guests can continue exploring the area or visit the Surinaams Museum when available.
