Peperpot Nature Park Discovery by Bike

Time

8:30 to 14:30

The Peperpot Nature Park Discovery Bike Tour combines history, culture, and nature while exploring one of Suriname’s most fascinating former plantations. Located just across the Suriname River from Paramaribo, Plantage Peperpot was founded by Simon Halewijn, who fled the Netherlands and settled in Suriname. The plantation was historically used for the cultivation and processing of crops such as tobacco, coffee, cocoa, and citrus.

Since 2009, the plantation has been transformed into Peperpot Nature Park, a protected area where visitors can experience Suriname’s tropical biodiversity in a peaceful setting. The park is home to many species of wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, lizards, and tropical birds, which can often be spotted along the trails.

Scattered throughout the area are several historical remnants of the plantation era, including the former coffee factory, the drying sheds, the plantation director’s house, the officer’s house, and the former supervisor’s residence. These structures offer a glimpse into Suriname’s colonial plantation history.

This tour provides a unique opportunity to explore the countryside by bicycle while learning about Suriname’s culture, agriculture, and natural environment.
