Braamspunt & Sea Turtle Experience

Tour Description

The Braamspunt Sea Turtle Experience offers a unique opportunity to witness one of nature’s most remarkable events along Suriname’s dynamic coastline. Braamspunt is a naturally formed beach of sand and shells that emerged in recent years as coastal currents reshaped the shoreline after the former Matapica nesting beach disappeared due to erosion. Today, this remote coastal area has become an important nesting site for several species of Sea Turtles.

Our guides approach this experience with respect for wildlife and strict conservation practices. All tour guides have received training from specialists who have studied Sea Turtles, and the tour follows internationally recognized guidelines established by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). These guidelines ensure that turtles are observed responsibly and without disturbing their natural nesting behavior.

The tour begins with a scenic boat trip from Leonsberg along the Suriname River toward Braamspunt, passing mangrove forests and historic Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam. Along the way, guests may spot coastal birds such as Royal Terns, Scarlet Ibises, and Magnificent Frigatebirds, and with some luck the playful Guiana River Dolphin.

Upon arrival at Braamspunt, guests have time to relax and explore the beach while observing wildlife such as Atlantic Ghost Crabs, Hermit Crabs, and occasionally the Crab-Eating Raccoon. After dinner and a short briefing on Sea Turtle conservation, the group walks along the beach after nightfall in search of nesting Sea Turtles.

2 Recommended Dress Code

To ensure a responsible and safe wildlife experience, guests are advised to wear dark-colored clothing during the tour. Sea turtles have limited vision on land and can easily be disturbed by movement and bright colors. Wearing dark clothing helps minimize disturbance and allows us to observe them respectfully.

We recommend the following:

Dark clothing (preferably black) to reduce visibility to nesting turtles consisting of

  • Long trousers (or zip-off trousers) to protect against vegetation, insects, and possible ticks during beach walks.

  • A long-sleeved shirt or light jacket to stay warm during the evening and to help prevent mosquito bites.

  • Comfortable walking shoes or worn-in boots suitable for walking on sand. Avoid wearing brand-new shoes to prevent discomfort or blisters.

3 Items to Bring

To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience during the tour, we recommend bringing the following essentials:

  • Sunscreen for protection during daytime beach walks.

  • Flashlight or headlamp with a red light (required for night walks and turtle observation).

  • Mosquito repellent (spray or gel).

  • Camera to capture the experience (please note that flash photography is not permitted near sea turtles).

  • Rain poncho or rain jacket, plus a rain cover for your bag if possible.

  • Comfortable backpack, preferably with a waterproof bag or liner to protect your belongings.

  • Zip-lock bags to keep your phone and electronics dry in case of rain.

  • Extra set of dry clothes and a towel in case you get wet.

  • Power bank to charge your devices if needed.
