Dolphin Watching & Plantation Rust en Werk at Sunset

Time

16:30 to 19:00

This afternoon river tour offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and history of Suriname’s coastal waterways. Traveling by boat along the Suriname River and the Commewijne district, guests can enjoy scenic river landscapes, rich birdlife, and the chance to encounter one of the region’s most fascinating wildlife species — the Guiana River Dolphin.

These dolphins inhabit Suriname’s brackish rivers and are easily recognizable by their distinctive pinkish belly. They can grow up to two meters in length and are often seen swimming and hunting in small groups. Researchers from the Green Heritage Fund Suriname have identified around sixty individual dolphins in the Suriname River system.

During the tour, we travel along mangrove-lined shores and pass the historic Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, located at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers. The river mouth is also an excellent place to observe coastal birds that thrive in this ecosystem.

After spending time observing the dolphins, the tour continues to Plantage Rust en Werk, an 18th-century plantation founded by Governor Wigbold Crommelin. By 1889 the plantation operated the largest sugar factory in the southern hemisphere. Today the plantation is privately owned by Armand van Alen and is primarily used for cattle breeding.

Guests will take a short guided walk across the plantation while learning about its history and transformation over time. As the evening approaches, we return to the boat and enjoy the beautiful sunset over the river before sailing back to Leonsberg.
