Discover the breathtaking rainforest of Brownsberg Nature Park and the peaceful atmosphere of Stone Island during this two-day adventure. Located about 100 km from Paramaribo, Brownsberg is one of Suriname’s most famous nature reserves, known for its rich biodiversity, scenic viewpoints, and stunning waterfalls.

The journey takes you along the Afobakka road before climbing the historic Agwago Kununu Pasie (AKP) to reach the Brownsberg plateau. Guided hikes lead you through tropical forest trails where you may spot monkeys, agoutis, colorful morpho butterflies, and other wildlife while learning about the local flora and fauna.

After exploring the park and its waterfalls, the tour continues to Stone Island, a peninsula formed during the creation of the Brokopondo Lake. Here guests enjoy dinner, an overnight stay, and peaceful lake views. The second day includes breakfast, kayaking on the lake, and time to relax before returning to Paramaribo.

Tour Plan

1 Tour Schedule Day 1

08:00 - Departure from Paramaribo
Guests board the bus at Torarica resort in Paramaribo and begin the scenic journey along the Afobakka road toward Brownsberg while the guide shares information about the surrounding villages, historical sites, and the landscape.

Breakfast Stop
Along the way the group stops at a local diner where guests can choose between sandwiches or pastries accompanied by coffee or tea before continuing the journey.

Drive to Brownsberg Plateau
After arriving at Brownsweg village the journey continues up the 13 km laterite road known as the Agwago Kununu Pasie (AKP). An experienced driver navigates the winding road until the group reaches the Brownsberg plateau.

Lunch at Brownsberg
Upon arrival lunch is served, usually consisting of rice with meat or vegetarian alternatives and vegetables, giving guests time to relax before the afternoon activities.

Guided Waterfall Hike
The group begins a guided rainforest hike to either Mazaroni Top and Leo Falls or Irene Falls. During the hike guests may encounter wildlife such as monkeys, agoutis, butterflies, and frogs while learning about the surrounding rainforest ecosystem.

Waterfall Break
At the waterfall guests have time to relax, enjoy the scenery, and cool off with a refreshing swim before hiking back to the plateau.

Transfer to Stone Island
In the late afternoon the group drives down the mountain and continues to Stone Island at the Brokopondo Lake.

Dinner & Overnight Stay
Dinner is served at the lodge on Stone Island where guests spend the night surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the lake.

2 Tour Schedule Day 2

Breakfast on Stone Island
The second day begins with breakfast overlooking the Brokopondo Lake. Early risers can enjoy the calm morning mist and quiet natural surroundings of the island.

Kayaking on the Lake
Guests prepare for a kayaking activity on the lake, paddling through the calm waters while enjoying views of the surrounding forest.

Brunch on the Island
After kayaking a relaxed brunch is served at the lodge.

Free Time on Stone Island
Guests can relax in one of the huts, hang a hammock, read a book, or take a refreshing swim in the lake.

12:00 – 13:00 Departure to Paramaribo
The group leaves Stone Island and begins the return journey to Paramaribo.

~16:00 Arrival in Paramaribo
The tour concludes with arrival back in the city.

3 Dresscode

For a comfortable and safe hiking experience, we recommend the following:

  • Light, breathable clothing suitable for Suriname’s tropical climate.

  • Long trousers (or zip-off trousers) to protect against vegetation, insects, and ticks during the hike.

  • A thin long-sleeved shirt to protect against insects and changing weather conditions.

  • Comfortable hiking shoes or worn-in running shoes with good grip for walking on forest trails.

4 Items to Bring

To make the most of your experience, we recommend bringing:

  • Swimwear if you wish to enjoy a refreshing swim at the waterfalls.

  • Passport, as police checks may occur along the Afobakka Road.

  • Mosquito repellent for protection during the hike.

  • Camera to capture the rainforest scenery and wildlife (please avoid using flash near animals).

  • Power bank for charging your devices during the trip.

  • Comfortable backpack to carry personal items during the hike.

  • Zip-lock bags or waterproof bag to protect electronics from rain.

  • Rain poncho or rain jacket, as tropical showers may occur.

  • Towel for after swimming or if you get wet during the hike.
